Lord Jim Knight former Minister of Education, UK Government, Shares his Insights on Global Learning & Innovation at CoSN17

Jim Knight is the Chief Education Adviser at TES Global Ltd, a member of the House of Lords and a visiting Professor at the Knowledge Lab of the UCL Institute of Education.

Dear Thought Leader,

I was honoured to meet Governor General His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston at his talk and book launch for Ingenious just last week. It wasn’t my first encounter with the Governor General; we previously battled for a puck in the corner of a hockey rink in Montreal. Off the ice Mr. Johnston is an engaging, deep thinker and innovator.

Johnston, who at the time was President of McGill University, hosted a faculty hockey tourney where I represented York University. While he was tough with BIG elbows on the ice I found him to be a kind and caring individual off the ice. From that time on, I followed David Jonston’s rising career path to the University of Waterloo as president where he further transformed UofW and the Region of Waterloo on it's journey to become the Silicon Valley of the north.

Since being appointed Governor General, David Johnston shared a vision of a kinder, smarter and more innovative Canada. He reiterated his vision of curiosity, passion, innovation and courage at the book launch last week. He also emphasized that we must, “cherish our teachers.” I was just as inspired during his talk as I was when I ran into his elbow in the corner of the rink. I reminded him of our encounter and he had a twinkle in his eye. I was humbled to have shared these experiences with such an inspirational leader.

One of his closing thoughts he shared, “Canada performs top 5 in OECD PISA rankings, we cannot become complacent.” Thank you Governor General Johnston for your dedication to Canada and helping elevate our country to World Class Status.

A fitting anecdote for our special Global edition of the MindShare Report.

I hope you enjoy it!

Until next time, keep the learning curve steep!

P.S. As a follow-up to myblog in last week’s Top10, we’ve declared this Friday #GoPaperlessDay. Please join in and pass it on!

Top Ten Ways to Create and Sustain a Global Classroom & School

by Timothy Gard, Chief Digital Strategist

Creating and sustaining a Global Classroom or School is much easier today than ever before. We have the technology, the infrastructure, and I think in many cases, the resolve to connect our classrooms and schools with different learning experiences across the globe. In fact, I would argue that every classroom and school should begin to create – if you haven’t already! – a mindset where each teacher and student thinks about the global community and the amazing collaborative experiences that are only a digital connection away!

So how do you create and sustain a Global Classroom and School? The list below is certainly not definitive, but it’s certainly a great place to start! Read through it and start to think about ways in which you might involve your classroom or school in a global adventure!

Building Leader and Educator Capacity for Transformation

What makes a great teacher great? They are continually innovating and assessing how their work can further improve student success and outcomes. This leads policy makers to ponder – how do we build the capacity of educators and leaders to continuously learn, innovate, and improve on what they do?

Building up your teachers is so important – and there are so many ways to do so! Teachers require practical experience and an ability to innovate a range of techniques to meet the needs of every student presented before them. Many teachers receive little preparation for the practical realities of classroom management. That’s why it is critical for systems to invest in initial teacher education, just as the top performing education systems do.

A Fascinating Poster Session Showcasing Global Educator Projects

MindShare Musings

As I write this blog, I’m in Chicago at the Symposium on Global Competencies hosted by our valued partners at CoSN. Conference season is definitely upon us with ERDI, CanLearn, Digifest, EdCampHalton, to name a few. While we cannot attend all of them, we do make an effort to cover the majority to stay on to of the latest EdTech trends.

Thrilled to connect with my PLN colleagues and friends at CoSN2017 (L-R) Charlene Blohm, Dr. Kecia Ray, Stephen Morse, Anne Wujcik, Dr. Rita Oates, Robert Martellacci

We’re planning a very unique and special day this Friday which we hope you’ll help us get trending on twitter via #GoPaperlessDay, Friday, April 7th. We’re challenging all educators across Canada to avoid the photocopier and go digital for the day. Did you know the next largest budget after teacher salaries is the photocopy budget? Imagine the resources that could be redirected to migrating from print to digital! Let’s accelerate the digital revolution by going green and paperless! PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!

Speaking of revolutions! I’m so impressed with the “New”Nelson Education, led by Steve Brown, CEO, who have been quietly re-tooling and embracing digital in a BIG way. Watch for exciting things to come from Canada’s oldest publisher!

In late breaking news…. Kudos to Computers for Schools Ontario who distributed to 3093 free laptops to Syrian refugee families.

We’re honoured to once again partner with our friends at ISTE17 in San Antonio, Texas. Watch for details of our CanAm Celebration of Excellence Partnering reception.

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep! R.M
