Canada 150 Classroom of the Future Contest Winners
Reflections on the 9th Classroom of the Future Contest
by Timothy Gard, Chief Digital Strategist

While reflecting on our nine years of offering educators and students across this great land of ours an opportunity to provide us with a glimpse into their classrooms infused with teaching and learning using technology, I can honestly state that I have been encouraged. I’m not encouraged because great new tools are being used, though these new tools have indeed provided new and expanded avenues of learning, but rather, I have been encouraged by the deeper learning that has resulted because teachers have worked out how to leverage these tools into their pedagogy in extremely effective ways.

MindShare Musings

“If you’re not mentoring, you’re not leading.” Words of wisdom I shared recently as I reflected with a colleague on what seasoned leaders do.

I’m blessed to collaborate with some amazing leaders in my role with MindShare and as president & co-founder of C21 Canada. There are common themes amongst high performing leaders that I’ve observed. Perhaps a book in the making! They tend to be high energy and physically active. Many are former athletes, or fitness minded, strong people skills (yes, you need to know how to make human connections). Innovative mindset and highly connected, strong moral compass and embrace the notion of lifelong learning.

In education, the notion of lifelong learning and an innovative mindset is no longer an option, but a necessity to stay at the top of your game in education. We thrive on staying at the forefront of innovation through our coverage of some 50 plus conferences annually to maintain our thought leadership and provide you with the latest trends in learning & technology.

Part of our inspiration for our Professional Learning edition of the MindShare Learning Report is to support teachers and leaders at all levels in augmenting their expertise and transformation. We acknowledge that we’re all in a different place in the technology adoption cycle. Whether you’re an early adopter, middle, or a laggard, we hope to provide you with a golden nugget or two that inspire you to take the digital leap. One of the most effective strategies I’ve employed is finding a mentor and also being a mentee. The reality is as I mentioned at the outset, if you’re not mentoring, you’re not leading.

Professional learning comes in many forms; formal, informal, online, blended, through social media (twitter, skype chats) and face to face through conference and workshops. It really comes down to your preferred learning style that works for you.

I had the opportunity to attend Dr. Ron Owston’s recent keynote at the recent World Blended Learning Conference in Toronto. One of the BIG takeaways was that students don’t want too much technology in their teaching day. The key is to be strategic in the technology you choose to integrate and not be too concerned about wowing your students with the latest tech.

Research shows that students prefer a moderate amount of technology in a classroom setting, according to Dr. Owston, York University

I always enjoy hearing from members of the MindShare community. Don’t hesitate to drop me a note to share a blog, or upcoming event!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep! R.M.
