C21 Canada District Site Visits Provide a Glimpse into the Future of K12 Learning in Canada |
|
|
My recent travels to Vancouver enabled me to connect with two C21 CEO Academy board members: Chris Kennedy, Superintendent, West Vancouver SD and Patricia Gartland, Superintendent. Coquitlam SD. While we often hear of High Tech-High as a Model School for the Future of Learning in Silicon Valley, I would argue that Canada boasts many of its own innovative schools and districts of tomorrow today. No need to travel south any longer if you’re searching for excellent examples of future schools today!
Special thanks to Chris, Patricia and their passionate educators and students for a most inspired visit!

Next Generation Schools Are No Longer An Option in Preparing Future Leaders

I often catch myself saying these days, "It's never been a more exciting time to be in education." The promise of technology and tools to engage students and accelerate learning is beyond what many of us ever imagined. Yet for the most part, I still see schools stuck in the industrial age model of learning.
What's holding us back? Imagination. Courage. Funding. And perhaps fear of failure?
In recent weeks I've had the good fortune of visiting a number of leading-edge schools in the K12 and post-secondary space across Canada. Last week I hosted a delegation from Oslo, Norway on a study visit in town for the ICDE World Conference on Online Learning. I see a number of themes emerging that I'd like to share in supporting and nurturing our country's schools in getting beyond pockets of innovation. My top 5 takeaways from recent school visits:
|
|
|
-
Cross collaboration with peers nationally and internationally to share and learn is vital to embedding a culture of innovation.
-
Creating innovative learning environments can be done cost effectively through strategic partnerships and planning.
-
Collaborative and inspirational spaces are replacing straight row desks and SMARTboards.
-
Inquiry-based learning, where students solve real-world problems, is one of the most powerful forms of learning teachers can infuse in their teaching practice to nurture 21st century skills.
-
Leadership is required at all levels by engaging key stakeholders in the success equation to inspire a shift from the industrial-age classroom to a true 21st century digital learning environment.
-
Bonus. Instilling the notion of agile and lifelong learning is vital to nurturing student success.
I look forward to taking a deeper dive into some of these themes, and more, at our upcoming 8th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit --
Designing Next Generation Schools for Today's Student Conference, Monday, November 6, MaRsDD, Toronto.

When technology is within their reach, students and educators can do remarkable things. When provided with the right tools and given the opportunity to collaborate, create, and problem solve, a student’s true potential is unlocked, and the mind is free to think and do amazing things.

Last month, we talked about transforming education to support our common goal – providing an inclusive and high-quality education for all students. We talked about some of the resources and tools that are available to support educators and school systems through their journey to achieve this. We also touched on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and ways to teach and align your curriculum and daily lessons to help achieve these Sustainable Goals.
