Dear thought leader,
At our recent Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit, I questioned why we are still talking about, ‘pockets of innovation.’ Every school and district across Canada has the potential to be a beacon of innovation. It’s no longer an option to be status quo in this highly competitive global economy. I challenged educators and tech leaders to get beyond the fear factor and take risks and innovate as our kids’ future depends on you.
This December issue provides strategic insights from our Summit, including, keynote podcasts and highlights that I hope will spark your imagination and inspire you to innovate your classroom, school or district. Special thanks to our team, delegates, presenters and sponsors for helping make it our best ever summit!
As you may know, this week incidentally marks Hour of Code Week, which is a great catalyst for innovation in your school. Speaking of which, I’m fortunate to have attended the Can2067STEM conference today for a national conversation on scaling STEM and innovation across Canada. The ‘stars’ do appear aligned!
With that, I’m thrilled to share our December MindShare Report featuring one of Canada’s STEM educator guru’s podcast, Brian Aspinall on his newly released book, Code Breaker.
In closing, this week marks an important milestone for MindShare Learning as we had our official ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Bonnie Crombie, City of Mississauga, launching Canada’s first shopping mall located MindShare Workspace nnovation Centre. The state-of-the-art facility will serve K12, post-secondary with respect to startup weekends, robotics camps, co-op and internship opportunities as well as professional learning opportunities for teachers. Some Thoughts on Coding in Honour of The Hour of Code Week

We are well into the Hour of Code movement this week. Millions of students in many different countries have spent time coding using various online and offline coding tools, and by the end of the week, these students will write millions of lines of code.You can keep track of the statistics at the Hour of Code website.Why code? I think most of us have heard the reasons why we should teach students to code. In fact, many municipalities around the world have made coding a part of their local curriculum, and the reasons for initiating this are varied. Some of stated that students will need to know how to code like they need to learn to read and write. Others have noted that learning to code is a way to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and enhance creativity and collaboration. Others have stated that our economies will need a legion of programmers to keep up with the demand of economies as we further integrate technology across all of our key industries and systems.

Just when I thought I was getting some time back in my life as an empty nester with three kids in university, I hit a new stratosphere in the workload category.
Embarking on the MindShare Workspace journey has been super exciting, daunting at the same time. Once I overcame the fear factor, and some tweaking to the business plan, we recently wrapped up the space reno in a record six weeks, or less!

With Computer Science Education Week upon us, we thought what better to focus on than STEM education and the importance of coding and technical skills for youth.
|
|
|
So why do we celebrate this week? The value of integrating computer science into everyday learning is more evident and critical than ever. With technology playing an ever-increasing role in our everyday lives, technological competence is no longer a nice-to-have, but a necessity for today’s curriculum and society.
Did you know that 50% of today’s jobs require some degree of technological skill? Further to this, in the next decade, this percentage is expected to increase to 77%. This represents a significant percentile of our students’ future jobs that will have technological fluency as a mandatory skillset. Not convinced yet? Keep reading.
The growth rate of digital jobs has already outpaced the overall economy’s rate by a ratio of over 4 to 1. In order to keep up with this rapid job growth, Canada will need approximately 43,000 IT students per year, yet in 2015, there were only 29,000 students – 6% of graduates – who graduated into the IT field. The skills gap is already an
evident issue.

|
So, what are educators doing to prepare the future of our workforce? They’re integrating STEM and technology into their everyday curriculum, they’re educating students on the wide variety of ICT jobs available in the market, and they’re teaching kids to code.
Microsoft is a strong supporter of the Hour of Code, a global movement led by Code.org. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to coding and computer science, designed to show that anyone can learn the basics! Tens of millions of students and over 200,000 teachers in 180 countries have engaged in an Hour of Code.
Want to host an hour but don’t know where to start? Check out this page for Minecraft coding tutorials, resources, and places you can go (like the Microsoft Stores) to attend an Hour of Code workshop!
