May 2018, Volume 11 Issue 3

May flowers have no doubt FINALLY sprung in many parts of our vast and great country of Canada.  With that, awards season is upon us! I’m pleased to share the Prime Minister Awards for teaching excellence. Cool to see STEM teachers recognized too!  Congrats to all recipients!

In our May issue we proudly honour more teaching and student excellence through an insightful and inspiring exclusive podcast with Dean Vendramin, our Western region winner of 10th Classroom of the Future Challenge: Extreme Classroom Makeover Winners!

Here’s a sneak peek at just three of our featured stories this month:

  1. New podcast episode: What we can learn from classrooms in the world’s top-performing education systems  (OECD Education),

  2. Canadian Provinces release the latest results on the performance of Grade 8 students in Reading, Math and Science (CMEC),

  3. Online learning isn’t as inclusive as you may think (University Affairs).

Talk about memory lane! Last weekend I attended the 50th Anniversary of my middle school Darcy McGee in the TCDSB.  Great to connect with former teachers, admins and students, and fellow C21 Canada CEO Academy member, Rory McGuckin, Director, TCDSB.  A very memorable event that was extremely well organized. Check out MindShare Musings for my reflections and highlights of Connectors, Leaders and People on the Move!

Please keep us in the loop with your news, events and comments. We love to hear from you!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

Best, R.

Sun West School Division Launches Leading-Edge Online courses in Partnership with Industry. Signals a Future Trend?
Sun West is launching two new online courses through a partnership with the Western Equipment Dealers Association (WEDA).  WEDA approached us to see if we would develop 2 high school courses that would highlight the career options in agriculture.  WEDA funded the development of these courses and are commiting to funding a coordinator for 5 years assisting agricultural dealerships and school divisions place high school students in dealerships for hands on practicums.  The dealerships will also fund the tuition costs of the online theory portion of these courses. The courses are: Agriculture Equipment Technician 20L and 30L (grade 11 and 12). Agricultural dealerships are having extreme difficulty attracting equipment mechanics and technicians.  For us in education, it allows us to have more options for high school students that may provide more student engagement leading to increasing graduation rates.

Changing the Face of STEM

STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math – a term that is becoming ever more prevalent in our everyday dialogue when it comes to education and the futures of our current students. Why is STEM education so important? By 2020, there could be a shortage of 500,000 digital workers, yet less than one in three of the current ICT workforce is female. It’s a gap we must address, and encouraging girls to engage in STEM subjects has never been more important.

There are many ‘reasons’ research points to that likely contribute to the lack of females in STEM subjects. Microsoft US research notes that interest and confidence of females in STEM subjects drops as they grow older, that there is misperception of what STEM careers are really like in the real world, and that there is a lack of female role models in STEM.

There is no one way to encourage girls to explore STEM subjects, but there is a clear connection when encouragement and positive reinforcement is provided, especially by parents. There are numerous avenues and resources available. With numerous groups and after-school clubs taking place across the country and within schools and free online resources – anyone can take part!

Microsoft has many of free tools to get all teachers and students started in changing the face of STEM!

  • Take part in an Hour of Code with the Minecraft Agent – no experience required!

  • Teachers can connect with peers from around the world and explore hundreds of courses and lesson plans on a variety of STEM topics with the Microsoft Educator Community!

  • Learn to code with Make:Code.com! Microsoft MakeCode brings computer science to life for all students with fun projects, immediate results, and both block and text editors for learners at different levels.

Looking for more? We have some exciting news! You can now sign up to be a micro:bit tester! The MakeCode team has created a new Windows 10 MakeCode for micro:bit app, and we need innovative educators like yourself to try it out before we release it to the rest of the world! It's currently in beta version, so if trying something new sounds like fun, sign-up now at microbit.org/testing/.

Honourable Mitzie Hunter Minister of Advanced Learning & Skills Visits the NEW MindShare Workspace--Makes Major Funding Announcment on Skills
MindShare’s Founder & CEO, Robert Martellacci presents a gift of athletic wear to Minister Hunter

It was a great honour to host Minister Mitzie Hunter recently at the MindShare Workspace. She is so polished and refined. Quite frankly, if MInister Hunter was at the helm of the LIberal leadrship in Ontario, they might stand a stronger chance at being re-elected.

Attending the 50th anniversary of Darcy McGee Catholic School was a highlight of this past weekend. For the record, it has not been 50 years since I graduated! Althought, it’s not far off! Connecting with friends, former teachers and administrators reflecting on championships won, memorable academic moments and my winning the grade 8 pie eating contest and a class trip to Terra Cotta was definitely one of the highlights!

That said, meeting up with principal Mr. Melady, teacher, Mr. Cassidy and Mr. Whitham, brought back fond memories and a bond that was quickly reignited.
