Dear Thought Leader,

Happy New Year and Happy Friday! I love this time of year as it represents a clean slate, new beginings and opportunities for success for 2019!

This marks our 11th Special Edition Top 10 Canadian EdTech Trends Report as I gaze into my crystal ball for 2019!

There is major shift happening where technology has become so pervasive in education, that it's really not about the technology and more about the learning. It's about people and making deeper connections. Learning happens best through human connections. To that end, it's no surprise that blended learning has gained far more traction than pure online learning. The good news is that the role of the teacher as a facilitator is so vitally important and not replaceable in my estimation.

Character and digital citizenship will become more pervasive as part of the learning process for students to make sense of complex digital world.

I hope you enjoy this edition of our Top 10 trends and predictions for 2019! As always, we welcome your feedback. All the best for 2019!

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

Best,

1. Flexible Learning Environments and Makerspaces Are Coming of Age in 2019
Research shows that students learn best when their learning environments are inspiring, colourful, encompassing functional furniture, and flexible learning spaces. This in combination with makerspaces will see more schools invest in creating optimal conditions for student success in combination with EdTech tools.
2. AI (Artificial Intelligence) Will Gain Greater Momentum Providing Greater Teacher-Student Personalization and Efficiencies for Teachers
The streamlining of repetitive processes and data analytics that lends itself to greater efficiencies and personalized learning and gives teachers more time back in their day is here today. There are a number of solutions that can help achieve deeper learning and skills.

For greater insight, here's an article from Mckinsey & Company to learn more.
3. Augmenting Digital Skills with STEM Will Gain More ST(E)AM in 2019; Thanks in Part to Federal Government CANCODE Funding!
We are predicting the $50 million infusion of  federal government funding for K12 STEM and Coding initiatives across schools this past year will continue into 2019. The CanCode program has had very good success in scaling STEM and Coding initiatives across Canada. This is one of the success stories for the Liberals and a BIG boost to their re-election efforts! Checkout the FREE CanCode resources and partners.
4. Home Grown Learning Platforms to Watch 2019
Traditionally, Canadians are known to be humble and low key. However, we should be proud of some of the "made in Canada" EdTech learning platform innovations, such as EdWin, Edsby and D2L. Each offers best in class solutions to support student learning depending your school or district needs.
5. It's about Igniting the Joy of Learning and NOT Just Student Engagement.
You can have the best EdTech tools in the world but it comes down to understanding your students and entertaining them beyond the cliche of student engagement. Students learn best when they're in a positive frame of mind, having fun and feel their teacher truly cares about them.

A good read I recommend, Embracing the Culture of Joy by Dean Shareski, who is a friend and a well known Canadian educator who inspires teachers and students globally. Dean is super active on Twitter and is sometimes quite hilarious with his tweets. You can follow Dan @shareski
6. A Greater Focus of Global Competencies, Such as Character and Digital Citizenship are Becoming Vitally Important to Make Sense of the Complex World Students Face Today
Fake News. is a term that really gained traction over the last couple of years. Teaching students to be globally aware digital citizens, instilling resiliancy has become essential in today's world given the pressures they face. We are well aware of the dark side of the web and the negative influences and the pressures that social media can bring.

A recommended read, SociaLEADia by teacher librarian, Jennifer-Casa Todd, which elegantly tells the story about her daughters and how she came to understand the challenges of managing the complexities of students interfacing with tech for good.
7. It's about Learning! EdTech finally makes it to mainstream acceptance in education
I've been immersed in EdTech for 20 plus years. It's been said that it took SMART Technologies 20 years to be an overnight success in their heyday. The reality is that it also takes a generation or two, for educators and schools to catchup to the multitude of tech they face on a daily basis. In 2019 we no longer need to talk about tech as it's become transparent where we use the right tool at the right time.

8. The Robots Are Coming!
On my recent trip to the China Education Innovation conference I had the opportunity to walk the show floor following my keynote. I was amazed to see the amount of robotics and the level of sophistication. Case in point, checkout the pic of the robot that is quite sizable and highly programmable. Stay tuned for more sophisticated robots to come make their way into Canadian schools!
9. EdTech Tools and Programs that Address Student Empathy and Well-being Will Gain More Importance to The Learning Process in 2019
Two notable Canadian solutions that come to mind are 21Toys, who won our first ever startup challenge and PeekaPak. Both award-winning made in Canada solutions!
10. Deeper Learning Achieved Through Collaborative Hands-On Student Projects Achieving More Balanced Screen time
Extensive research is now available through organizations such as the Alberta  Association of Optometrists offering teachers and parents strategies to achieve a more balanced use of computers and mobile devices for deeper learning.
