1. Provincial Government to Introduce New Model of Assessment and Evaluation for High School Students

As part of the ongoing work to modernize the K-12 education system, the Provincial Government will be engaging with its partners in education to introduce a new evaluation framework for high school students. This step marks the elimination of public exams from the public education system.

 

A consultation process will launch this fall with parents/guardians and educators on proposed options for assessing high school students as the development process continues. It is anticipated that a new model of assessment and evaluation will be implemented for the 2025-26 school year.

4. Canadian youth celebrate double victory at prestigious European science contest

Ottawa, September 19, 2023 – Youth Science Canada celebrates the outstanding performance of Elizabeth Chen from Edmonton and Arushi Nath of Toronto, who earned top awards at the 34th European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) held in Brussels, Belgium, September 12-17.

 

Chen was awarded first prize for her project, Optimization of CAR-T Cell Therapy using RNA-Sequencing Analysis for Biomarker Identification, which earned her the Best Project (Discovery) Award at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in May of this year. Nath won second prize for her project, Developing algorithms to determine asteroid’s physical properties and success of deflection missions, which earned her Best Project (Innovation) Award at CWSF 2023.

6. Game-changing insights using 5G technologies

In a unique collaboration, the University of Waterloo and Rogers Communications are joining forces to revolutionize the world of hockey analytics using 5G technology. This partnership could help reshape how hockey fans engage with the game and provide teams with valuable insights for data-driven decision making. This research partnership emerged from a 2020 hockey hackathon that was organized by Velocity, where Waterloo students had the opportunity to access proprietary NHL data sets and were tasked with generating ideas and offer new solutions that Rogers owned Sportsnet could incorporate into their viewing experiences.

7. New online curriculum vitae tool coming to York U

York University is testing a new tool – Discover York Academics – that will help faculty members centralize and showcase their academic and professional work online.  
Discover York Academics is an electronic curriculum vitae tool that acts as a searchable, online database for faculty to document and share their research, publications, scholarly and creative works, and related teaching and professional activities. Faculty can also display their availability for graduate student supervision, academic and industry collaborations and more.

8. $3.75 M for new Global Climate Center on AI and Biodiversity Change

Today, the National Science Foundation (NSF) Global Centres Initiative, announced the creation of a new Global Climate Center on AI and Biodiversity Change (ABC) to help provide solutions and to meet the challenges posed by the biodiversity crisis. The ABC Centre, which will be located at the University of Ohio, brings together researchers from six universities in the United States and Canada, including McGill, with partners in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, to develop new AI-enabled, data-supported approaches to study how changes in climate are impacting life – including mammals, birds, insects, and plants – on Earth. The Canadian team unites researchers from McGill, the University of British Columbia (UBC), and the University of Guelph, which was awarded a $3.75 million grant through the NSERC Alliance program in support of the Centre’s research activities.

9. Brock partners with NOTL Museum to create interactive historical display software

The Brock University Assistant Professor of Computer Science has a long-standing interest in using his software expertise to educate the public, particularly young people, about the past.

As a professor, it’s very important for me to give back to the community,” he says.

With a little help from Professor of Computer Science Beatrice Ombuki-Berman, Ezzati-Jivan approached the Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) Museum, connecting with Managing Director and Curator Sarah Kaufman.

 

Together, Ezzati-Jivan and Kaufman created the “ Innovating an Interactive Experience Software for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum” project.

 

This collaboration allowed us to extend the educational impact beyond the classroom, engage with local history and create meaningful connections within the community,” says Ezzati-Jivan.

10. Racing to the future: RRC Polytech and AWS team up to showcase the value of AI and machine learning

Today, the Agora of Red River College Polytechnic’s (RRC Polytech) Manitou a bi Bii daziigae building will transform into an action-packed racetrack. It’s no Formula 1 – more like Formula 1/18 – as the vehicles in question are 1/18th scale, fully autonomous race cars with all-wheel drive, monster truck tires, an HD video camera, and on-board computer.

 

It’s all part of the Winnipeg DeepRacer Competition, powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) – a race that invites anyone aspiring to gain machine learning skills to compete. Eight student teams from RRC Polytech are in the running to achieve AI greatness, all while deepening their learning and building on skills they’ve built in the classroom.
