A MindShareTV Learning Moment >> A Canadian Perspective at NYCSCATE23 Mission: Possible Conference
|
|
|
Dear Thought Leader,
Last week I apparently stirred some emotion in our readership with my reference to the 'archaic industrial learning environments' that still exist today. Perhaps it was taken out of context as the point I was trying to make, we need to get beyond pockets of innovation. I've seen many great examples of innovative classrooms and schools, however it truly is an equity issue when limited to a select number of classrooms or schools across a district.
I can appreciate scaling district-wide is costly, however, there are creative & cost-effective methods, where strategic partnerships can perhaps also accelerate this process.
Did you know? Classroom design can account for 16% of the difference in students’ academic progress according to edutopia research.
In this issue, I'm pleased to share a reflection and images from our #CDNEdTech23 Summit site visit to the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Education newly renovated learning spaces.
I'd love to hear from our readership on your journey of how you envisioned & scaled your innovative schools/learning environments. We are happy to feature you on a MindshareTV podcast, or in a feature blog.
This week I had the good fortune of attending the NYSCATE conference with our neighours across Lake Ontario. It was interesting to get a Canadian perspective (have a listen to our MindShareTV podcast) as fellow Canadians, Aman, Henry and Warren provided some great insight on trends and how they are helping transform learning with a diversity and inclusion lens. AI was truly top-of-mind amongst attendees and presenters. I came across three AI books published by teachers and leaders, including a MindShareTV podcast featuring legendary edleader, keynoter and podcaster, Carl Hooker. Generative AI cannot be ignored and can certainly be leveraged as a tool to support student inquiry and enhance teacher classroom management efficiencies.
As it's been a busy conference month, checkout more highlights from the ICDE global conference.
In closing, we are grateful to you for your support and commitment to honing your craft. Please keep us in mind as we are always looking for newsworthy stories to share around learning & innovation across Canada and beyond.
Happy Thanksgiving to our friends & colleagues in the U.S.!
Friends and colleagues in the GTA, join us for our 6th anniversary Holiday reception, Wednesday, December 6, 5-8pm at the MindShare Workspace! Please RSVP! Hope to see you there!
Until next time, stay healthy, stay safe, and keep the digital learning curve steep!

|
P.S. I would be remiss not to shine a light on Financial Literacy Month given the current economic conditions across Canada. I'm pleased to share some resources provided by our Federal Government. It truly is a critical literacy and life skill students need to garner to navigate the complexities of living and thriving in their careers and life in general.

I was inspired to share some photos from CDNEdTech23 last week. One of the biggest challenges I see, How to cost-effectively create innovative and equitable learning spaces to support helping all students thrive? I'm sharing an inspirational tour of the innovative U of Ottawa faculty of Ed classroom where eSports is played as well. It includes a HUGE media wall and movable furniture among other elements you can see. There is a separate podcasting studio which I would recommend too! sorry to miss your conference as I'm ICDE - International Council for Open and Distance Education in Costa Rica exchanging expert ideas on the future of online learning!

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some K-12 public schools are racing to improve protection against the threat of online attacks, but lax cybersecurity means thousands of others are vulnerable to ransomware gangs that can steal confidential data and disrupt operations.
Since a White House conference in August on ransomware threats, dozens of school districts have signed up for free cybersecurity services, and federal officials have hosted exercises with schools to help them learn how to better secure their networks, said Anne Neuberger, the Biden’s administration’s deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technology. |

7. Generative AI: The teacher that can help close the skills gap?
venturebeat.com, November 17, 2023 |
|
|
The global talent gap is long-lamented and continues to grow — in the U.S. alone, there are currently 9.6 million job openings compared to 6.5 million unemployed.
This has many calling for upskilling and re-skilling of existing workforces. However, while many business leaders recognize that need, they are hampered by a lack of time, resources and funds to develop materials on which to train their workers.

1. Helping Children Become Thoughtful Users of AI - Part 3
Last spring my grade 6 students and teaching partner, Tim Groenewegen, were part of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board's professional collaborative inquiry into ChatGPT. About 30 educators from kindergarten to grade 12 were provided with a VPN-enabled iPad that allowed us to access OpenAI. Our job was to explore the potential of ChatGPT for learning and then make recommendations to the board as to whether or not ChatGPT should be made available to all teachers and students. I invite you to follow this series of articles about the experience.
