1. Virtual Experience brings historic Parliament building to life through innovative technologies. A coproduction by the Library of Parliament and the National Film Board of Canada

Gov of Canada: May 13, 2020

A new experience is opening the doors to the historical seat of Parliament in virtual reality (VR), online and in the classroom. It provides Canadians who are at home during the COVID-19 pandemic with a new way to step inside the centre of federal democracy.

Parliament: The Virtual Experience offers an innovative look inside Centre Block, which closed last year for long-term rehabilitation. This landmark building was the site of debates and decisions that shaped Canada for almost 100 years, a rich legacy that is showcased to the public in this new work.

The 15-minute experience highlights key public spaces, including the Senate, House of Commons, Library of Parliament and Peace Tower. Each chapter offers a new perspective on Parliament – its history, its art and its role in the lives of Canadians.

2. As you navigate COVID-19, imagine working from home by design: UCalgary professor and architect ponders change in residential design

Uof C: May 21, 2020

Whether a takeover of the dining room table or an isolated retreat in a corner of the basement, landing on the ideal home-work space can be an elusive goal.

Due to COVID-19,
upwards of 40 per cent of Canada’s overall workforce is toiling from home; that’s nearly five million more people than usual suddenly faced with working in cramped or otherwise awkward home-work environments. As many people have discovered, an evening on the sofa with your laptop once in a while is a far cry from 40 or more hours per week of deadlines and videoconferencing taking place alongside homeschooling, cooking and other necessary distractions.

8. Coronavirus: When teaching during a disaster, students need to be partners

The Conversation: May 19, 2020

Many universities and colleges are planning to teach most of their courses online in the fall, even though there are still many unknowns.

Post-secondary institutions first transitioned from face-to-face to online learning in March, when the threat of COVID-19 emerged. Institutions brought differing levels of experience and preparedness to this endeavour. Experts in educational technology weighed in on the best ways to both understand and implement such a rapid transition.

9. Student Council Elections in the Age of COVID

A post-mortem of electing student executives — without being in school
:MediumMay 22, 2020

May 22, 2020, the 1,600 students of John Fraser Secondary School would have lined up in the atrium to cast their ballots for next year’s Student Activity Council (SAC) executives. In previous years, it was a crowded affair. This year, crowds are illegal.

Fraser Votes was initially conceived in late 2019 as part of the school’s effort to transition to digital infrastructure. JFSS had already rolled out digital timetables, obsoleting the thousands of printed timetables distributed at the start of every term. We created the system with our values in mind: democracy and student's voice.

As a novel student-built election management solution, there were challenges. Nevertheless, 44% of the student population successfully cast their digital vote — a 165% year-over-year increase.
