This Week in Canadian EdTech MindShareTV with Dwayne Matthews, OCT, Chief Innovation Evangelist, Tomorrow Now Learning Labs

Dear Thought Leader,

What a difference a year makes. This time last year, I was honoured to be an invited presenter at the 5th China Education Innovation Expo along side global education thought leaders, Sugata Mitra, founder, The Hole In the Wall - 2013 TED Prize winner; Richard Culatta, CEO, ISTE; and Patricia Gartland, Superintendent & CEO, Coquitlam SD 43, B.C, to name a few notables in education.

Talk about a learning adventure, I had no Visa and was told I could pick one up on arrival in Hong Kong. When I arrived at the Visa office I was starring at a jail cell behind the officers which made me slightly nervous. Thankfully my colleague on the ground in China, Adam Turnball, was quite correct and the photo truly does say it all as I needed an artifact to share my excitement and relief after travelling 14 hours on a plane.

Fast forward to November 23 and our lives have been turned upside down testing our resiliency for a 2nd time as we face yet another lockdown. Ironically, the epicentre of COVID-19 is very much back to normal. I'm hopeful that we will see normalcy back in our lives very soon as well! Let's continue to take the necessary precautionary measures and encourage others to do the same.

My 5 lessons from my China trip:

1. Yes you can easily get a 10-Day China Visa upon arrival in Hong Kong.

2. Your PLC should include local, national and international connections to give you a broader perspective and lens on education. I learned a ton!

2. Don't settle for mediocrity as you will be left behind. Excellence is infectious!

3. Take a more wholistic or balanced focus on academics, infusing physical activity as part of the daily curriculum has too many benefits to mention here. School design thinking is a key conduit that got my attention while on school tours in China.

4. Technology is a tool that should have a pedagogical means to an end.

5.  Canadian education is the envy of much of the world. Savor this reality as you embrace the innovator's mindset.

As ISTE20 is fast approaching November 29 to December 5.... it's not too late to register for both ISTE Live Virtual and the 18th CanAm Celebration of Excellence Virtual Meetup at #ISTE20. Quote of the Week

"“Learning what educators are planning, where they are challenged, and what they are hoping to achieve is invaluable. The insights and conversations often inspire new ideas and the kind of impactful solutions that allow us to be a better technology partner to our school board customers across Canada. This recognition is particularly gratifying given the impact education has on every child. We believe technology has an important role to play both in bringing education to more children, and eliminating barriers for those who find some elements of learning a challenge”
