5 Things You Should be Doing to Prepare for the Future Beyond COVID and the Return of the Roaring 20s!
Whether you're an entrepreneur, professional, or student, you're likely pondering your next move as we're all 'so done' with COVID. In this issue we share a research report from Accenture highlighting that 40% of individuals would pay for a third space to work or learn outside their home.
Coworking has finally come of age! 7 years ago I envisioned workers enjoying a cool and modern 'cafe style' workspace close to home, thereby reducing the stress of commuting, minimize your carbon footprint and enjoy a more balanced family life. I'm not complaining, I'm excited to be nurturing our next wave of startups, entrepreneurs, remote workers and students looking to experience a "NEW" way to work & learn. AND, by the way. my commute is now 2 minutes if I catch all green lights vs 90-120 minute drive in the past.
5 things that you need to consider as you plan your next move:
1. Do Your Homework Now! To my pleasant surprise, we've had multiple inquires of late by people looking for coworking spaces. While we're not fully open, we are able to conduct tours safely either online or in person. This was perhaps spurred by the recent article that appeared throughout the media recently that I referenced earlier. People just need a change of pace working from home, whether it's once a week, or more permanent space. You have options!
2. Follow Your Passion. Be the Expert! You've no doubt honed a passion or have 'gifts' that makes you an expert of sorts. Talk to your friends and get their frank advice about opportunities to start a new business, or pursue an entirely new career. Draw a roadmap of where you see yourself over the next 5 years. It will be an eye opening exercise!
3. Solve a Real Problem. NOW Start a Google Doc and Draft a Business Plan and Pitch Deck. This is exactly how I began my coworking journey. Losing your office can be a traumatic moment which is what happened to me and my company several years ago. York U and Seneca College had kindly partnered with us, however, they were short on space and need it back. A HUGE Problem to solve! Born was the coworking concept and I decided to build it close to home for the benefits I mentioned earlier. As a connector of people, the share office concept solved multiple challenges for me and really suited by skillset. I socialized the hell out of the pitch deck and concept and drove my family crazy talking about it.
4. Be Courageous! Eventually I pulled the trigger on a lease space which was a HUGE commitment! Four years later, we're still going strong and looking at expansion! The pandemic taught us that life is too short and to not defer plans that may never be realized. It's about making an impact an pulling the trigger on renting a space, investing in a stock, or in yourself. Courageous leadership is about making an impact on community and people to leave your mark whereby your leverage your skills, or gifts and human capital to make an impact.
5. Execute with Passion. It's about PASSSION & A CALL TO ACTION! Once you get your ducks in order in the way of a business plan, you need to dedicate 150% to the effort which will be tough at first, however, the rewards can be great, especially if you're in charge of your destiny.
Don't be discouraged by the naysayers close to you, they just need to be reassured of the problem you are solving and how you expect to fix it. Remember, you are the expert!
A special shoutout to our frontline workers, our community members, teachers and parents, who have helped keep it all together to sustain work and learning during the most challenging period in modern times. This is what gives me great hope, the human spirit that exists within you. We're almost out of the woods!
Wishing our community and beyond a blessed Eid Mubarak. Stay safe everyone!
