|
Dear Thought Leader,
Happy Monday! As I pen this intro, we are in the midst of preparing to leave for the Future of Education Conference (FETC) in New Orleans tomorrow where we will be hosting our 25th CanAm EdTech Celebration of Excellence Partnering Reception.
With some 300 plus Canadian education and industry delegates at FETC, we are now over capacity for our CanAm reception. A nice problem to have! However, if you are attending and haven't registered, please do drop by to say hello! Here's the invite link. We'd love to see you!
Last week's Top 10 Trends for 2023 was our most popular EdTech Report edition ever garnering almost a 60% open rate! Thank you for you continued support which fuels our passion to bring you the very best news and insights from across Canada and beyond!
Upon reflection, I had one miss-- Infusing the notion of Storytelling in the Top10. As we give students more agency, storytelling is all the rage! Teachers can allow students to leverage tech creativity tools, whether it's through an animated movie, Minecraft, or podcast which engages the student where they are at, while nurturing formative assessment opportunities .
Kick off your morning with an inspirational 'New' Leaders & Legends podcast featuring one of Canada's most notable education commentators. Dwayne Matthews seen on national television on a very regular basis and I unpacked last week's Top 10 EdTech Trends for 2023. It was so great to finally meet Dwayne in person, where we had a deep discussion over lunch focused ChatGPT, digital transformation and cyber security with plans for further collaboration in the future. Stay tuned!

We had such a memorable school visit last week at McMurrich Junior School, TDSB to Present Ms. Capitao-Tavares, Canada's EdTech Teacher of the Year (also Prime Minister Award Winner). See photo highlights! Looking forward to presenting Paper and Vireo their awards at FETC!
New for 2023 we'll be featuring regular monthly Product Reviews to bring you the very latest in EdTech tools. Drop me a note if you like to recommend a new product, or suggest your company's product as well!
As we continue to drive digital transformation to enhance work & learning, it's never been more evident that it's about people and building community to help each other thrive. Hence, I continue to pen my long awaited book! "The Art of Networking in the Digital Age--Your Playbook to Building Human Connections to Thrive." I welcome you to share your stories that I might infuse in the book as I'm taking a 'crowdsourcing' approach.
I hope you enjoy this week's Top 10 Canadian EdTech Report powered by MindShare Learning.

3. Video gaming can bolster classroom learning, but not without teacher support
phys.org, January 18, 2023 |
|
|
One highlight of my Grade 3 life was dying from dysentery at the hands of a video game. I was ahead on schoolwork, and allowed to use the classroom computer to pioneer a family across America in the game The Oregon Trail.
It was odd that I played this in a Canadian school—rather than exploring something like the challenges of long-haul trucking in the game Crosscountry Canada.

5. Can We Please Not Jump to Banning Stuff!
cultureofyes.ca, January 17, 2023 |
|
|
I think I am sounding like the old guy telling you I have seen this all before.
Last week, I wrote about Chat GPT, which is getting a lot of interest in education. I ended that post saying, “What a great opportunity to not make the mistakes of the past and see technology as a threat, but rather an opportunity for us to rethink how it could add value to our work.”
To go back a few years, I was there for the great calculator debates. I had classes that banned the use of calculators, or restricted the use of calculators, or allowed calculators for certain parts of classes or exams but not others.

Can professors tell the difference between AI-generated writing and words written by a student? And could technologies such as ChatGPT be used ethically for course work? Or would using them be akin to plagiarism?
These kinds of questions will soon be put to University of Calgary professors and their students as part of a research project led by Sarah Elaine Eaton, an associate professor at the Werklund School of Education.

10. Bridging the digital divide: NAIT students take on Canada’s connectivity problem
techlifetoday.ca, January 17, 2022 |
|
|
Patrick Potiuk (Wireless Systems Engineering Technology ’22) grew up well connected. He lived in a suburban city near Edmonton and never worried about access to the internet.
In fact, he spent much of his life in virtual environments. He’s tech savvy and, as part of the gaming community, the type who has friends online he’s never met in person.
For Potiuk, the web was like electricity or clean water. A given.
