Happy Valentine's Day! One of my BIG takeaways from the Education Research and Development Institute last week is the importance placed on relationships in education by leaders. Related to that and this special day, a recent Harvard study revealed that the top determinant to longevity is....drum roll please, 'positive relationships.' #1 over diet and exercise.
Although this notion of positive relationships may be obvious, we are all guilty of neglecting our family and people around us. On this special day, make a point going out of your way to show your love and caring for people who you interact with. It will go a long way in paying its dividends! Pun intended.
It was an honour to return to the ERDI Winter Institute to share the Top 10 Trends shaping the future of education. As an expert network advisor, I had the opportunity to interact with education and industry leaders from across north america and beyond. Kudos ERDI on an excellent professional learning institute, and to the Consulate General of Canada Los Angeles and New York for supporting several Canadian EdTech startups including: iBlum, StemMinds, Peekapak, Cyber Legends, Studyo and Vireo. You made Canada proud!
Not unlike Canadian actors, singers and comedians, EdTech startups tend to go into the U.S. first to validate their technology before achieving success in Canada. We need to do a better job at embracing our home-grown innovation. Let's celebrate our innovators and take more risks in test driving their innovative solutions!

Several Ontario school boards are planning to continue offering virtual learning next year, forging ahead before provincial direction is set, and saying it's now more about a different mode of learning rather than a pandemic response.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board and Toronto District School Board are all set to continue remote learning in 2023-24.
The Durham, Peel and Lambton Kent district school boards plan to offer virtual learning again, subject to enrolment. They are surveying families on their preferences for the upcoming year to find out if there will be enough interest in remote offerings. |

Today, elementary mathematics classrooms look and sound very different than what many parents may have experienced.
Many mathematics education researchers note that getting learners talking about mathematics and developing their own explanations is important.
To build students’ comfort and capabilities talking about math, sharing tasks that involve only pictures — what we call numberless or textless tasks — can elicit fascinating mathematical ideas. This puts learners in the driver’s seat, noticing, wondering and actually doing mathematics for themselves.

Let’s put aside the myth that K–12 teachers and leaders who identify as Indigenous, Black and People of Colour (IBPOC) are experts in equity, making them naturally inclined to discuss race, class, or gender at the drop of a hat. Let’s also put aside the assumption that only racialized and Indigenous people should be engaged in equity, diversity, inclusion and decolonization work. Let’s recognize that all educators and leaders should be committing to and engaging in anti-racism, anti-oppression and decolonization practices.

4. Surgeon General says 13 is ‘too early’ to join social media

US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy says he believes 13 is too young for children to be on social media platforms, because although sites allow children of that age to join, kids are still “developing their identity.” Meta, Twitter, and a host of other social media giants currently allow 13-year-olds to join their platforms.
“I, personally, based on the data I’ve seen, believe that 13 is too early … It’s a time where it’s really important for us to be thoughtful about what’s going into how they think about their own self-worth and their relationships and the skewed and often distorted environment of social media often does a disservice to many of those children,” Murthy said on “CNN Newsroom.”

Artificial intelligence research was once the sole domain of computing scientists with expertise in coding and machine learning models. But that’s no longer the case. Today’s AI world looks a lot different — researchers from diverse disciplines are weaving together their expertise to solve countless real-world problems.
The Canada CIFAR AI Chairs, a foundational component of the CIFAR Pan-Canadian AI Strategy, are research powerhouses leading the charge — and thanks to a $30-million investment, the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) will soon be home to 20 faculty members who will be eligible to join their ranks, helping Alberta maintain its world-leading status in AI research and technology.

Several Canadian universities are crafting policies on ChatGPT, a popular artificial intelligence (AI) tool that is raising plagiarism concerns in the education sector.
ChatGPT, an AI text generator released to the public last November by developer OpenAI, can be anything the user makes of it — it can take on the role of a chef and provide recipes, make business plans for marketers, create press releases for public relations specialists or give advice like a therapist.

8. Technology layoffs hit international education sector

International education has been no exception to the widely reported layoffs across the technology sector, with a number of digital student recruitment companies and online program management providers cutting staff numbers.
Among technology companies that have reduced staff numbers in the past year are ApplyBoard, which laid off some 6% of its global workforce in late 2022, and Adventus, which saw almost 40 customer success and admissions, sales and HR staff cut. The company said the cuts were mainly down to “amalgamation of divisions”. |

As Canada is currently facing a considerable talent and diversity gap in the cybersecurity sector, one of the aims of CyberStart Canada is to promote greater diversity and inclusion. Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada is pleased to announce the launch of the 2023– 25 Digital Skills for Youth (DS4Y) competition.
The 2023– 25 DS4Y competition is looking for o rganizations to help deliver the program. Delivery organizations should have a strong network of small to medium-sized businesses and not-for-profit organizations that can create employment opportunities to help youth build the digital skills needed in the digital economy. The opportunities should help prepare youth to adapt to the major changes expected in tomorrow’s workplace, including in emerging areas where the jobs may not yet exist, such as those related to cyber security, the automation of knowledge tasks, big data and artificial intelligence, among others.
