This past week I was honoured to be invited to my alma mater, Toronto District School Board Unleashing Learning conference. There is something to be said about the power of human connections that deepens learning experiences. TDSB's Director, Colleen Russell-Rawlins kicked off the day with an inspirational keynote. Kudos to Peter Singh, Kevin Bradbeer & their team members for a fabulous learning day showcasing the work of teachers and students.

1. Winners Announced For 2023 Surrey Schools Minecraft Challenge

The winners have been announced for the 2023 Surrey Schools Minecraft Challenge, which saw students take on bridge engineering for this year’s build. Entries were divided into three age groups, Primary (K-3), Intermediate (Grades 4-7) and Secondary (Grades 8-12).

2. Robots to the rescue: Students build robots programmed to respond to natural disasters

Students in the Gifted Enrichment Centre (GEC) Robotics & Engineering cohort were given the following prompt: “Disaster has struck, and the provincial government has hired your robotics engineering firm to be part of the recovery and restoration process.”

 

Student groups each selected a local natural disaster to solve. Disasters included: a Stanley Park windstorm, a landslide on a major highway, an earthquake in Vancouver, an avalanche on a local North Shore mountain, and a forest fire in the Interior.

3. A progress report on Indigenous education in Ontario's publicly funded schools

New report by People for Education shows that publicly funded schools in Ontario have made significant progress towards Indigenous education over the last decade but we still have a long way to go to fulfill the education-related Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

5. Esport Canada to Host 2023 Annual General Meeting at EsportsTravel Summit

Winnipeg, Manitoba - Esport Canada and Northstar Meetings Group, a division of Northstar Travel Group, have announced an agreement that makes the EsportsTravel Summit the exclusive home to the 2023 Esport Canada Annual General Meeting, a national organization dedicated to the development and promotion of esports in Canada. Esport Canada is a federally registered Not-For-Profit and is recognized by the International Esports Federation as the national governing body for esports in Canada responsible for fielding competitive teams at IESF events.

6. “Talking Textbook” on Homelessness Wins International Innovation Award for Trent University Team

Trent University's Dr. Kristy Buccieri has been advocating for an end to homelessness since her early days as a student when she volunteered at a youth drop-in centre. Her passion for this issue has only grown with time, leading her to develop an innovative approach to educating a new generation of students about homelessness. 

 

Earlier this month at a ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, Professor Buccieri (Otonabee College fellow) and her colleagues took home the award for Excellence in Online and Blended Learning Innovation from the Online Learning Consortium.

7. Lassonde showcases SARIT to Toronto corporate leaders

Members of the Lassonde School of Engineering attended the Toronto Region Board of Trade’s (TRBOT) “Above the Radar” event to expand awareness of SARIT, the three-wheeled micro-mobility electric vehicle with a 100-kilometer range, in anticipation of the start of full production in mid-2023.

 

As the world moves towards a more sustainable future, micro-mobility solutions such as SARIT – which stands for Safe, Affordable Reliable, Innovative Transit – will become increasingly important to reduce greenhouse gases, ease traffic jams and solve parking problems. The SARIT project is a collaboration between manufacturer, and former governor of York University, Frank Stronach, and the SARIT Project Team at Lassonde. Since 2021, York has served as a living lab for the vehicle, with faculty, students and more than two dozen York staff, who are running real-life tests of the cars through their work in areas such as maintenance, security and parking.

8. Ground broken for new Innovation Arena in downtown Kitchener

The University of Waterloo and Velocity are officially expanding their presence in downtown Kitchener today with a groundbreaking event at the new Innovation Arena building on Waterloo's Health Sciences campus. 

 

The new site is part of Waterloo's expanding pipeline for health innovation in southwestern Ontario, thanks to funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), Ontario's provincial government, the City of Kitchener and philanthropic gifts.

9. How will AI chatbots impact education at universities and in our workplaces?

Technological advancements have allowed humans to use tools to perform tasks on their behalf, even automating them to save people time and increase their convenience. From manufacturing to household items, automation is everywhere. But what happens when you automate language and writing, the cornerstone of our culture and our means to express and communicate with one another?

 

With the advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) language models such as ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer), researchers at Ontario Tech University are attempting to answer that question and what AI technology means to education and our world as a whole.
