1. Saskatoon students help mobility-limited kids by building electronics

Students at Montgomery School in Saskatoon are learning about building electronics by helping make electronic adaptive switches for kids with movement-limiting disabilities.
The Hack-a-Toy event is put on in partnership between the school and Neil Squire’s Makers Making Change Program, and gives kids the chance to create these devices with soldering irons and 3D printing.
Over 100 students from Grades 5 to 8 are participating in the Tuesday event.

2. The Government of Canada invests in artificial intelligence and teaching French as a second language from early childhood

Teaching French as a second language is essential to encouraging bilingualism and promoting the French language in Canada. The Government of Canada recognizes the importance of supporting continuous minority-language education from early childhood to the post-secondary level, and we are proud to support innovative initiatives that will help us meet this goal.
Today, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced more than $2 million in funding to Voilà Community Help for two projects that use metaverse technology to support French-language teaching. 3. HMH Acquires Canadian EdTech Company Classcraft

4. Teachers say B.C. school teens showed improved grades and social skills after a ban on phones

When British Columbia school counsellor Tulani Pierce started noticing mental health trouble in some of her students last year, she said it gave her an idea: ban cellphones in the classroom.
They were distracted and they had a hard time putting their phones away, she said.
It's been five months since students at Chatelech Secondary School on B.C.'s Sunshine Coast have been banned from using their cellphones without permission, and Pierce said they've seen promising results.

Monday, May 15, the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) held an official partnership announcement ceremony. President at the Arrow Group of Companies, Sam Ibrahim, invests 25 million dollars in a partnership with the University of Toronto Scarborough, Canada, which transforms the Instructional Centre Phase 2 (IC2) into the Sam Ibrahim Centre for Inclusive Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership, the university revealed.
In front of invited guests and in a live transmission, the University of Toronto Scarborough officially unveiled CEBRA’s and ZAS Architects + Interiors’ renderings of the Sam Ibrahim Building and the Sam Ibrahim Centre designs. An applauding audience was presented with renderings of the building exterior, the Power Technical Staffing Lounge and the KGS Research Math and Stats Help Centre inside the building, the auditorium of Arrow Innovation Hall, as well as the interior design of the Sam Ibrahim Centre for Inclusive Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Leadership. 7. The Government of Canada awards Concordia University a historic $123M research grant to electrify society and decarbonize communities

Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne announced today that Concordia University will receive a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) grant of $123,160,035. The grant, which will be distributed over seven years, will support the activities and initiatives encompassed in Electrifying Society: Towards Decarbonized Resilient Communities. |

8. Dell announces three new AI/ML managed services

The first impulse of many artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) model builders and application developers, says Dell Technologies, is to turn to easy-to-consume public cloud services, but there may be cost issues and integration challenges with existing systems and data.
Additionally, it adds, the rise of large language models such as ChatGPT and Bard necessitates increased compute power and big data sets for AI/ML training. “This raises cost and privacy concerns – driving even more businesses to own their AI/ML operations and management.

9. George Brown College Ready to Tackle Climate Change Challenges with the Launch of The BrookField Sustainability Institute

George Brown College (GBC) took a huge step forward in addressing what the United Nations calls "the defining issue of our time" with the launch of the Brookfield Sustainability Insititute (BSI), a first-of-its-kind, college-based centre of excellence in Ontario to tackle challenges posed by climate change.
BSI works with businesses, governments, not-for-profit organizations and other institutions to create tangible solutions for building sustainable communities, and it aims to address climate change issues through talent development and research. We celebrated the official BSI launch on May 18 with trendsetters and innovators of the banking and building sectors and with the support of political leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who shared words of support via video.
