Teachers often find it difficult to implement lessons that help students go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations. In fact, institutional norms and habits that permeate all classrooms can actually be enabling “non-thinking” student behavior. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into this practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom.

Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur.

1. Tackling misinformation with Minecraft: How these B.C. students are learning to separate fact from fiction
globalnews.ca, May 23, 2023

Students at a Coquitlam middle school are learning about the dangers of online misinformation using tools to help spot the difference between fact and fiction.

Mason Foulkes, a grade 6/7 teacher at Maple Creek Middle School, says children are inundated daily with online misinformation and disinformation.

"All of your information now is coming from social media feeds. Unverified sources. Misinformation spreads like wildfire. It's the new way we need to prepare our kids for the future."

Foulkes's lesson plan takes a non-traditional approach to teaching.

Instead of the students simply completing a worksheet, they're exploring a new world in the popular video game Minecraft.

Teachers today are faced with a unique challenge. Education has never been one-size-fits-all, but student needs are more diverse than they’ve ever been. Imagine designing a personalized learning plan for each student—it’s like putting together a puzzle where every piece is unique. And that’s just the start! 6. How AI has helped a Newfoundland start-up develop an online exam proctoring process that could have an impact on education technology worldwide
saltwire.com, May 23, 2023
Bradleygrant@rogers.com

In March 2020, as educational institutions made a haphazard transition to the digital world, Ebuka Amaefula found himself surprised. A few months before, Amaefula had moved to St. John’s, N.L., to pursue a Master’s degree in computer science at Memorial University. Before that, while working in India, he and his friend, Isaac Uloko, had developed the first version of Owlya, an artificial intelligence-powered online assessment platform that helps proctors and trainers to detect if a student is cheating.

“It was a solution to a problem that we had,” recalls Amaefula, who, at the time, was working as a software developer but also needed to train teams of fellow employees.

Before the trainees could service clients, however, they needed to pass a test, and Amaefula’s job was to monitor them.“I built a tool that would let me monitor them when they were taking the test without neglecting my responsibilities as a software developer,” he said.

When Sheryl Deal headed to Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Moose Jaw campus in 2018 as her daughter Megan’s medical aid, she couldn’t have known where it would lead. Expecting to remain in the background of Megan’s classes unless needed, she found herself with time on her hands and an interest in what was being taught.

“Megan uses a wheelchair and doesn’t need me all the time,” explains Deal. “She’s an independent-minded 23-year-old and really attacks life. My role while she was in class was just being there if needed. I had lots of time to listen in and think.”
