This Week in Canadian EdTech MindShareTV Podcast Featuring Dr. Kecia Ray, Co-producer of Tech & Learning EdExec Summit
Bradleygrant@rogers.com

Dear Thought Leader,

I trust you are enjoying the summer relaxing, reflecting and recharging for back to school that is seemingly arriving at an accelerated pace with age!

This past week I was honoured to attend the ERDI U.S. Summer Institute in D.C. as an EdTech Expert Network Advisor. This event attracts senior district leaders from across America who connect with education industry leaders in a collegial setting to solve some of the most complex challenges in K12 education; in my estimation unparalleled summer professional learning led by ERDI CEO, Dr. Jennifer Ferrari.

While I presented on the Future of AI in Education and guided EdTech industry partners on strategy as part of my role in being there, I'm equally grateful for the collaborative learning community conversations that stretched my thinking and vision for the future of education across North America and beyond.

Why am I going down this professional learning rabbit hole when everyone in education appeared so done with the academic year?

My worry is that we are on the cusp of the most significant technology revolution (driven in large part by A.I.) in education since the industrial revolution and we are not ready for it. According to one of our Top 10 articles in this issue, "86% of Canadians say they are not prepared to meet the digital skills requirements of the future."

Hence, our inspiration for our upcoming 14th Canadian EdTech Summit -- Empowering Innovative & Sustainable Learning Environments for the Future, with a lens on equity and inclusion. We need to collectively do our part to prepare our next generation students with the essential skills like the 7Cs (competencies for deep learning) crafted by C21 Canada to help all students be resilient and agile learners and leaders to be better prepared for an increasingly complex world.

Issue Highlights!
  1. Announcing the Opening Keynote at the 14th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit -- Daniel Sax, CEO & Co-founder, Canadian Space Mining Corporation. Daniel will surely provide inspiration to innovating education as he and his team work with CSA and NASA to solve greater challenges beyond earth.
  2. Be sure to tune into my podcast with renowned education technology expert,        Dr. Kecia Ray, MindShare TV Podcast on EdTech Trends and Unpacking the EdExec Summit for Industry and Education leaders
  3.  Rosedale girls are national champs for reinventing a more sustainable Sarnia on Minecraft
  4. Educators 'wholly unprepared' for student use of artificial intelligence
  5. Concordians launch the first space-bound student-built satellite in Quebec
  6. Canada struggles to prepare its workforce for changing digital economy
  7. Thinking of making a pivot into the education technology industry and not sure where to start? Register for our soon-to-release EdTech Professional Microcredential Course Launch & Summer Institute (hybrid) August 22. Only $50 for the first 50 people!

5. Rosedale girls are national champs for reinventing a more sustainable Sarnia on Minecraft
thesarniajournal.ca, July 5, 2023

An all-girl team of Grade 6 and 7 students from Rosedale School has placed first in Canada in a contest that required them to design a better Sarnia, create it using Minecraft, and narrate a four-minute video being shared with the world.

The challenge put to them was to study global sustainability goals as set out by the United Nations and envision what their own community would look like if it met those goals.

6. Educators 'wholly unprepared' for student use of artificial intelligence
calgaryherald.com, July 4, 2023
Bradleygrant@rogers.com

As students gain access to an exploding array of artificial intelligence applications — from ChatGPT to Bing and Bard AI — public schools and universities are scrambling to address the sea change to ensure academic integrity is upheld.

But instead of banning AI tools or policing student work, experts say educators must reinvent how they teach through critical thinking, comparing original work to AI outputs and providing “authentic” assessments for stronger learning outcomes.

“Educators at every level are wholly unprepared for teaching with ChatGPT or any AI app for the coming school year,” says Sarah Elaine Eaton, an associate professor and ethics expert with the University of Calgary’s Werklund School of Education.

concordia.ca, July 6, 2023

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on a resupply mission to the International Space Station on June 5. On board was Space Concordia’s Orbital Dust Imaging Nanosat (SC-ODIN), the first space-bound student-built satellite in Quebec.

SC-ODIN was developed in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and Nanoracks — a satellite rideshare service provider. Its primary mission is to gather multispectral images of aerosol particles from dust storms on the Namibian coast to provide data for climate research.
